In 1949 benaderde de Parijse schilder Henri Goetz Henri Sennelier, de destijds al beroemde fabrikant van kunstenaarsmaterialen, over het maken van een waskleurenstok voor zijn vriend Pablo Picasso. Picasso, al lange tijd klant van Sennelier en een frequente bezoeker van hun winkel aan de overkant van het Louvre, was op zoek naar een medium dat vrij kon worden gebruikt op verschillende oppervlakken zonder te vervagen of te barsten.

Hun samenwerking leverde de onvergelijkbare Sennelier oliepastel op. Oorspronkelijk verkrijgbaar in een palet van klassieke tinten, werd de kleurselectie uitgebreid met de toevoeging van metallic en iriserende tinten.

In 1949, Parisian painter Henri Goetz approached Henri Sennelier, the then already famous manufacturer of artists' materials, about making a wax colour stick for his friend Pablo Picasso. Picasso, a long-time Sennelier customer and a frequent visitor to their shop across from the Louvre, was looking for a medium that could be used freely on different surfaces without fading or cracking.

Their collaboration produced the incomparable Sennelier oil pastel. Originally available in a palette of classic shades, the colour selection expanded with the addition of metallic and iridescent hues.
