Stephen woont in West-Cornwall waar hij is blootgesteld aan al het drama van woeste landschappen en de altijd aanwezige invloed van de Atlantische Oceaan. Al heel zijn leven is hij omringd door de zee en door mensen die hun leven op het water doorbrengen. Zo heeft hij 30 jaar bij de Royal Navy gediend en is hij ook een professionele zeekajakgids.

Door deze aspecten van zij leven werd hij blootgesteld aan de zee in al haar grillige stemmingen. Hij heeft zo gekajakt op een mistige oceaan die zo kalm en windstil was dat het moeilijk was om te weten welke kant boven was. Hij is ook op de oceaan geweest met golven die zo hoog waren dat hij niet zeker wist of een vliegdekschip zich zou herstellen van een helling toen het over de zee draaide. Het is zeker waar dat de zee ons vaak op de proef stelt voordat ze ons een les leert. De raadselachtige oceaan is zonder twijfel de grootste invloed op zijn kunst.

A beautiful work depicting a wild, rainy autumn season. Stephen lives in West Cornwall, where he is exposed to all the drama of rugged landscapes and the ever-present influence of the Atlantic Ocean. All his life he has been surrounded by the sea and by people who spend their lives on the water. He served in the Royal Navy for 30 years and is also a professional sea kayaking guide.

These aspects of his life exposed him to the sea in all its capricious moods. He has kayaked on a foggy ocean so calm and windless that it was difficult to know which way was up. He has also been on the ocean with waves so high that he was unsure whether an aircraft carrier would recover from a tilt as it turned across the sea. It is certainly true that the sea often tests us before teaching us a lesson. The enigmatic ocean is undoubtedly the greatest influence on his art.
