General Pencil Company, a family-owned business since 1889, was founded by Edward Weissenborn, a mechanical engineer who learned pencil making in Germany. After establishing the American Pencil Company in 1860, he sold it in 1885 to pursue naval engineering. His son, Oscar A. Weissenborn, founded the Pencil Exchange in 1889, which later became General Pencil in 1923. The company faced challenges during World War I but survived by innovating new lead formulas. Today, General Pencil remains a leader in fine art supplies, still led by the Weissenborn family, with continued expansion and recognition, including features on ABC and Modern Marvels.
