De term "Polychromos" is afgeleid van de Griekse woorden poly (veel) en chroma (kleur) De veelheid van kleuren in het Polychromos assortiment en hun oneindige variaties van gemengde kleuren doen de Griekse naam eer aan.
Deze potloden zijn al sinds 1908 op de markt en hebben dus duidelijk hun waarde bewezen. Het gebruik van hoogwaardige materialen bieden de hoogste breukweerstand, ongeëvenaarde lichtbestendigheid, uitstekende kleurschittering, veeg- en waterbestendig en een optimale overschilderbaarheid.
Deze potloden zijn er ook in een aquarel variant onder de naam Albrecht Durer.
