Kleurpotloden

Consistentie: zacht versus hard

Coloured pencils

Coloured pencils are now very popular with every creative person. This has not always been the case. It was not until the 1960s that people recognized that coloured pencils were a fully-fledged means of making art. The popular Faber Castell Polychromos coloured pencil had already been on the market for 50 years.

The popularity of the coloured pencil is mainly due to its ease of use. You can take it with you on a trip, you have much more control over the medium than a brush, it doesn't dry out, etc.

With coloured pencils you can easily express your own style: detailed, realistic or abstract is all possible with coloured pencils.

Coloured pencils can also be combined with other mediums, such as graphite, markers, gel pens, watercolour, pastels and gouache!

Quality

When buying pencils, the most important decision you will make is; Do I buy study grade or artist grade coloured pencils.

If your budget allows, buy artist quality pencils. They blend/burnish better and contain more pigment, creating richer colours than with study grade pencils.

Everycolor also sells the colours of many brands separately, so that you can gradually build up the entire color range of a type of pencil.

Consistency: soft versus hard

In summary, your preference consistency partly comes down to personal preference and the art style you like. Most people will prefer a soft coloured pencil that lays down vibrant colours smoothly and easily on paper and is easier to blend. Some may prefer a sturdier pencil that allows you to create more detailed work.

The consistency of the lead may vary by brand and pencil type, depending on the specific combination of ingredients used by the manufacturer,

Most artist grade pencils are on the softer side than study grade pencils, as they contain less binder and filler and more pigment. A disadvantage of soft pencils is that the tip quickly becomes less sharp and therefore they have to be sharpened more often.

Hard coloured pencils are more suitable for detailed drawings (such as hair and fur, for example). These hard pencils are also available in artist quality (Tombow Irojiten, Caran d'Ache Pablo).

Types of coloured pencils

There are three main types of crayons: wax-based, oil-based, and water-soluble. We describe the water-soluble pencils or watercolor pencils in the relevant category.

Wax-based coloring pencils

Most coloured pencils are wax based. The wax gives the pencil a smooth texture that allows the pigment to flow over the surface and adhere better to the surface.

Wax-based pencils are available in a wide variety of consistencies. Because wax-based pencils are so common, there is likely to be a pencil to suit your needs and budget.

The only downside to wax-based pencils is wax bloom. Wax bloom is a natural oxidation process that can cause the wax to rise to the surface of the artwork and leave a pale haze. The chance of this is greater if you apply many layers or work with darker colours.

Artists who use a lot of dark colours and thick layers should therefore consider oil-based pencils.

Oil-based coloured pencils.

In oil-based colouring pencils oil is used to bind the pigment. They have a slightly different consistency because of this.

Most oil-based pencils are a bit firmer than many wax-based pencils, but still softer than study-grade pencils. The sturdier lead also means they are less likely to break and require less sharpening.

However, oil-based pencils have some drawbacks. They shed a little more and are more difficult to erase.

Oil-based pencils are not inherently better or worse than their wax-based counterparts. Illustratively, most manufacturers do not emphasize whether the pencil they sell is oil- or wax-based.
