Het was in de jaren zestig dat Percy Coate begon te experimenteren met de wilg die hij verbouwde om houtskool te tekenen. Hoewel het enige jaren duurde om de techniek te perfectioneren, was hij in de jaren 70 eindelijk klaar om de nieuwe Coates Willow Charcoal met de wereld te delen. Percy's grootvader, Robert Coate, begon in 1819 als een 'withy merchant', die lokale wilgengewassen opkocht en verkocht. Tegenwoordig is Coates nog steeds een familiebedrijf met leden van de familie die bij alle aspecten van het bedrijf betrokken zijn. Coates wilgenhoutskool wordt al vele jaren erkend als de beste kwaliteit wilgenhoutskool ter wereld en we willen die reputatie de komende jaren graag behouden.
De wilgenboom die wordt gebruikt voor het maken van houtskool van kunstenaars groeit erg snel en duurt slechts één groeiseizoen voordat hij klaar is voor gebruik. Het duurt 3 dagen om ruwe wilgenstokken om te zetten in wilgenhoutskool, klaar voor gebruik door de kunstenaar.

It was back in the 1960s that Percy Coate began experimenting with the willow he grew to make drawing charcoal. Although it took some years to perfect the technique, by the 1970s he was finally ready to share the new Coates Willow Charcoal with the world. Percy's grandfather, Robert Coate started in business in 1819 as a 'withy merchant', buying and selling local willow crops. Today Coates is still very much a family concern with members of the family involved in all aspects of the business. For many years now Coates willow charcoal has been recognised as the best quality willow charcoal in the world and we are eager to maintain that reputation in the years to come.
The willow plant used for making artist charcoal grows very quickly and takes only one growing season before it is ready for use. It takes 3 days to turn raw willow sticks into willow charcoal ready for the artist to use.
